Hearts for Lucy

We've been messy craft machines around our house lately, and yesterday we made some pretty special pieces - Hearts for Lucy:
The Cupcake with her creations

Lucy is the youngest of 4 children in the Marlett family. Lucy is dying. Soon. Her parents have realized this and made the difficult move to comfort care, and part of the comfort they want to provide to their daughter (and their 3 other young children) is to fill Lucy's hospital room with hearts and cards and love.

I found out about their request from a Facebook link to a blog link to a different blog link - I hadn't read the family's blog or heard of them before I saw it, and honestly I haven't read much beyond the most recent posts even now,  but I knew immediately we would be on board to send some love. I can't imagine these circumstances, and I hope I never have to, but I can do crafts and I too have a love of mail. I can only imagine that a Santa-sack full of sparkly envelopes just might perk up the family's feelings, if only for a brief time.

We had just picked up some foam hearts and princess stickers thinking they might be useful around Valentine's Day, so I rationed a few out to TC and just let her go to town. I did the letters in Lucy's name and centered one of the hearts, otherwise it's all 3 year old chaos and excess. I think that works. It's sparkly and happy, and that's what we'd like to send to Lucy and her family. A few moments of sparkles and happiness.

We're sending them per the instructions on the family blog:
Our hope and prayer for Lucy in these final days, weeks…is that we'll surround her with love, wrap her in it, bathe her in it, saturate her with it!
So...I have an idea.  Not unlike any other admission in which our girl celebrated so many holidays in the hospital, we need to decorate her room.  It's time to take down the Christmas decorations, and bring on the LOVE!  For the love of Lucy send hearts, send cards, send love notes to Lucy, affirmations of love…help us surround her with love.
The hospital address is:
Nemours A. I. DuPont Hospital for Children
℅ Lucy Marlett Room 3708
1600 Rockland Road
Wilmington, DE 19803

Don't Worry...

In case you were annoyed by my happy mood yesterday, don't fret - I went home and started to read a memoir of a woman with ALS, and then caught up on this blog I'd been reading since just before TC was born. That was quite enough heartache for a while, so today we're back to happy.

TC had another awful night, not sure if we're still cursing teeth or she just likes to mess with us, but we've had a rough few nights in a row. Luckily when she woke up for the day she was all smiles and we've had a great (if overwhelming) morning.

So far today I killed a spider, force fed TC 2 meals, spent 2 hours setting up a new account at the credit union (screw you, Wells Fargo. Charging me $15 a month after being a great customer for 15+ years! Shame on you!), picked up some essentials at Costco, mailed a package at the post office, and made a deposit at the evil bank until I can get all my auto debits re-routed.

And I did it all with a maniac toddler at my side.

SO MANY GOLD STARS!!! Whew.

Errands are definitely adventures these days, but it feels very good to get things done. And it seems to have worn out lil Cupcake as well, she went right down for her nap and is on her way to a good one. I've been able to catch up on MadMen and Game of Thrones, so I've had my fun too. And a $.57 fountain Coke from Costco goes a long way towards a sunny disposition as well :)

And now, back to budgeting and menu planning...

Spring in my step...

HAPPY FRIDAY! HAPPY 3 WEEKS LEFT IN THE WORKING WORLD!
(potentially that much closer to poverty, but what the hell - it's been really fun so far).

I'm having a good week.

Yesterday I spent the morning in a class about starting nonprofits, then had a really positive meeting for my coaching job, and finally I swung by another JBF sale and got some great deals on a few more shirts to match all the pants we got at the last sale, and I happened to stumble on one of these guys:

$30, looks like they are around $90 retail, and it's in great shape! So far TC likes to bite him on the ears and stuff the saddle full of toys more than bounce or rock, but if nothing else it's a little variation for ME, I needed some new scenery.

The Cupcake isn't so picky. She seemed to like the plastic hangers best out of all of her "toys" lately, and the biggest thrill yesterday was the discovery of an old pocketbook bound for the trash - but don't tell her that, it had to be pried from her fingers at bedtime.

Isn't that a beautiful metaphor for how we're enjoying the simple things lately, taking pleasure in the objects that are already around us instead of clamoring for new, reusing and recycling and hugging the world, and overall making the most of this stay at home mom stuff?

Okay, fine, it's not that deep. And I forgot what we were even talking about. Mostly because this made me laugh out loud until I cried mascara down my cheeks and couldn't breathe to read it to my husband, and an hour later I'm still giggling about it. I would like to add "receive cross dressing Lego men in the mail" to my bucket list, but stuff like that just doesn't happen to me and it would just be a constant reminder my life could be that much cooler. But I feel better knowing it happened somewhere in the world. And "mustachioed" is a great word. And I'm still having a GREAT week.

30 Days of Joy

For a while I made some posts with the "brought me joy" tag, intending to do it regularly. Then I got uber busy and all mom-ed out, and sort of sucktastic about blogging in general. I'm working on it. And thus, I'm picking up Maggie's gauntlet and going to try and do something FUN every day for 30 days. Actually, I'm sure I do something fun every day, so the key will just be recognizing and remembering it in the haze of poop/puke/flying prunes that is my daily life. And then making it online to post about it.

So here we go Internets, FUN day 1:
Guilt free "gear up for a crazy day" power breakfast:

http://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gif

and as I imbibed the aforementioned high calorie goodness, I giggled over some websites I'd gotten behind on:
Damn You Auto Correct
Failbook
Passive Aggressive Notes

I also used sucktastic above, which my spell check violently opposes, but I'm letting it ride. How fun is that?

Pumping Moms

I'm contributing to a new blog called Pumping Moms and my post is up today. You can read it here, it might eventually be a good resource for EP (exclusively pumping) moms. But if you are scared of boobs or breast milk, or if you'd rather not learn about my sore nipples (I completely understand) you should instead distract yourself with this HILARIOUS post from The Bloggess that Al sent me this morning.

People Who Impress Me: Filth Wizardry

I stumbled on the "Filth Wizardry" blog a while back and knew I had to book mark it right away - this woman and her kids do the most amazing, yet accessible crafts. And they actually play with them, and don't come off all blog-snobby like some mommyblog sites do, where you know that everything is staged perfectly and the kid probably never gets to actually touch the paint. In fact, it appears from many of the photos that they have a stretch of concrete outside their house that is covered with bright paint drops from their various projects, which is all kinds of awesome. Anyways, her daughters are currently into Star Wars, and so she whipped up some Milk Jug Storm Trooper costumes:

Yeah, she totally did that. And she teaches you how too, in a handy little step by step tutorial with photos, HERE.

And her post just before that - just as awesome:

Those are little peg dolls she made into the whole darned cast, INCLUDING HAN SOLO IN CARBONITE.

Wow. Just, wow.

I'm not personally a huge Star Wars nerd, but I can appreciate the culture, and most of all I appreciate that you don't have to be a professional artist to pull these off - they're "REAL" somehow, like with street cred :)

Yes, crafters care about street cred. Or I do anyways. She reminds me of my mom, who seemed to like playing and creating as much (sometimes more) than I did, and whose whole attitude towards messy toys like Playdoh was "eh, let it dry, it'll vacuum up!"

Please give me the patience to be this kind of mom :)

Bakerella, you evil temptress...

How dare you introduce me to sites like Bake It Pretty. That spells trouble with a capital $.

I'm drooling a little bit...

Drumroll Please...

With the help of an uber-talented geek-minded friend who prefers to remain anonymous, this blog has now migrated over to MY VERY OWN WEBSITE!

WELCOME TO:

HeathersCreativeLife.com

WHOO HOO! It's the next step in my (slowly) unfolding empire, and I'm extremely excited! I don't have a complete roadmap for where I'm going with all of this yet(and I'm still holding out for that call from Intel), but watch for a few more surprises coming soon. Or eventually. :)

As a side effect the search function seems to be disabled, I'll look into it next week. In the meantime you can scroll all the way down and use the keyword labels on the right, or the "recent posts", that seems to be working okay still.

5 More sites I have recently wasted significant time on:

totallylookslike.com - a few of these made me laugh out loud, which is not good when you are feigning work.

STFUParents.tumblr.com - a nice site if you appreciated "Pregnant Women are Smug." This is what smug pregnant women turn into after birth. I've seen so many of these people, I really should start submitting.

UgliestTattoos.com - See mom, I could have done so much worse.

awkwardfamilyphotos.com - I have resisted posting some of the gems from my childhood specifically because I fear ending up on this site.

ApostropheAbuse.com - this one is a GREAT idea, but needs a little help in the execution. They don't post regularly, but I continue to support it as a community service - apostrophe education is clearly lacking in our country.

5 Other Blogs to Visit:

I forgot to sync my backup drive with the photos I uploaded from the weekend, so none of my pics today. Instead, I thought I'd do another inspiration post - I could actually use a little more of this right now, along with time to actually execute the ideas. I'm in a bit of a craft drought due to other obligations taking over my life lately, but I plan to get back to it this weekend.

So, here are some of the craft-ish blogs I follow:

SwissMiss - "A Swiss Designer Gone NYC" - I'm not much into her designer lingo and expensive furnishings, and Lord knows I don't share her minimalist aesthetic, but she seems to spend plenty of time online and does some great cross posts. She finds fun products which are inspiring, if not always affordable, and the best part: SHE UPDATES A LOT. EVERY DAY AND THEN SOME. This is basically my #1 critique of most bloggers, they get popular and then get lazy. Swiss Miss is keeping it up so far...of course, she's also scoring some big bank off it. In addition to her design gig, she's now taking sponsors for her blog at the tidy sum of $850/week. If any of y'all would like to throw that cash at me, feel free :)

NotMartha - She's really scattered as far as what she posts, sort of like myself. Some days it's a list of links to cool projects or products, some days she does her own projects with excellent photos and step by step instructions. I first stumbled upon her when I found her Halloween Spider Cakes, which are still on my list to make for a spooky dinner party some day, and recently she did some pretty cute mini gingerbread houses to garnish mugs of hot cocoa. I don't see a rhyme or reason to when or how often she posts.

Bakerella - She bakes things. Usually tiny things. And gives you step by step instructions on how she did it. Her stuff is so fun, and her photos are so good, she almost has me convinced I could really make these projects. Someday I will (see bucketlist #112). For now I just die at the cuteness. The only thing that makes me sad is that she generally posts once a week. I suppose that is forgivable since these projects must take forever. But I'm a demanding reader, and I crave cuteness daily.

NotSoHumblePie - this is a new one on my list, brought to my attention by the oh-so-creative Carin, she of the TrueBlood Cupcakes, the Alice in the House costume, and the GORGEOUS holiday sugar cookies. She should really start her own blog. But I digress - Carin told me about NotSoHumblePie and it is ADORABLE as well! The author is a scientist who now bakes, and her love of science is still hilariously represented. She's done sugar cookies of mice & fruit flies, people wearing haz-mat suits, and some gorgeous martha-esque snowflakes. She seems to post daily, though a lot of it is also gourmet cooking that I have no patience to try :) But the cookies are right up there with Bakerella for cuteness factor, and earn additional wit points for their science themes.

LearnSomethingEveryDay - This one isn't explicitly crafty, but it's definitely interesting and can inspire craftiness. The site takes a while to load, but each day it features a new little factoid and accompanying doodle. Most of them are really interesting, and yet totally obscure - I really do usually learn something new - i.e Hitler was a vegetarian (December 23, 2009). Who objects to eating meat but is fine wiping out entire populations?!?! Or Barbie's full name...do you know what it is? Look at December 26, 2009. Yesterday's fact was that the actors voicing the original Mickey and Minnie were actually married. That is just mind blowing! Okay, but at the least it is cool.

The Season of Giving - Responsibly

This post started out as a short little blurb on a comedy website I like to read.Cake Wrecks is kicking off a big cool charity drive today and through the next 14 days, pledging to give at least $200 (personally) and challenging readers to add their own $1 per day, which could result in over $80,000 for each day's chosen group if everyone really played along. Pretty cool. She's asked for suggestions of charities you support to help her decide what to feature. That really gets you thinking of what groups you've benefited from or are thankful for, and what you could do to give back.

Recently a couple I know well (that wishes to remain nameless) purchased, assembled, and delivered 10 bikes to a local charity. They'll be given to children in the community who otherwise wouldn't have holiday presents - and now imagine how wonderful it will be to get a new bicycle! They did it all anonymously and without fanfare, but I just have to say how proud I am of their act of generosity - thanks so much. What a great way to get in the holiday spirit, doing something fun and hands on, but totally for the benefit of a child you don't even know. It's a great example for the rest of us.

Another important figure in my life makes a special trip each year to shop specifically for teenagers and gives the items to a holiday charity. Teenagers are often under-represented in toy drives, it's usually cheaper and easier and more fun to buy dolls, trucks, and other toys for much younger kids, leaving the older ones feeling even more left out during a difficult time of year.

While I'm no longer a part of the Roseville Women of Today, they have chosen to adopt several families for the holidays as their final philanthropic project. I feel like I made a lot of this possible with all of the fundraisers I put together for the group, and while I don't get the fun of shopping for and wrapping all the gifts this year, I still know I helped to make it possible for a few local working-poor families to have a happy holiday.

I think giving back is a very important goal. That said, I think there is a lot of bad behavior that gets overlooked because it is "for charity." Am I sick of being asked at every fast food register if I want to donate $2 to this or that? Yes. Do I ever take them up on it? No. And here's why: I don't give $$ at the cash register because I like to look at the mission statement of a charity and see if it is really something I can get behind. I want to look at their financials and be sure nobody is getting rich off of it (i.e. National Night Out) and that a very high percentage of my donation will really make it to the end user of the charity, and not be frittered away on salaries and administrative costs. A lot of walks/runs/bike trips for diseases sound great, but you dig deeper to find out that more than 50% of what you pay just goes to cover the costs of the walker/runner/biker - this was really important for me to look at when I was thinking of doing The Breast Cancer 3-Day. I couldn't imagine asking people for money just so I could have a fun weekend - so I made sure that a huge percentage of the monies raised actually went to breast cancer research and education before I signed on. "Mission Trips" fall into a similar category for me - I don't want to fund your vacation, I want proof my $$ is going to HELP.

And another charitable concern I have seems to be getting a lot more popular - do I think it is okay to donate to a charity "in the name of" someone else, and say that is their gift? Absolutely not. If you wish to give to a charity you support, you should do so, do so generously if you can. Feel free to prioritize this over giving gifts to friends and loved ones if you will - but don't do it and then say it is for them, unless you know specifically that it is a charity they support and find worthwhile. I know there are several charities I would be horrified to give money to, and when money is given "in my name" that is nearly the same - and they're not always the charities you would think of.

For example, I do not support the Boy Scouts of America. Have I drawn your ire? Please, hear me out. The Boy Scouts of America is a wonderful group for those that they accept, and I had several friends who made Eagle Scout in high school and I was quite proud. But they are a private, religiously-based institution which has chosen not to accept gay scouts or scout leaders, along with atheists and agnostics. I do not in any way think these groups should be COMPELLED to accept anyone, in fact I fully support the court rulings. But, in turn, I will not support The Boy Scouts because of this decision. This means I don't buy wreaths, popcorn, or help with their food drives, even though I have some adorable little 2nd cousins who are maybe the cutest scouts ever. Instead, I choose organizations whom I feel more closely abide by my values - none are perfect, but I want my money to work towards achieving goals that I support.

I also try to look locally for groups working to make my community a better place. Our economic downturn has increased the need for food shelf assistance and the number of displaced pets - while donating to a national food program or ASPCA is good, even better is to donate to your LOCAL food shelf or shelter. This decreases administrative costs and more of your money goes right back into your own community.

It's not a bad idea to look at donating to charities your family and friends have benefitted from. I personally have several CaringBridge websites in my bookmarks, and have found the site very beneficial as far as following the struggles of my friends and family fighting cancer and other illness, and cheering them on when I can.

I also really love This American Life on public radio. Does it save lives? No. Does it bring a lot of joy into my life? Yes. Someday I'd like to be able to give something back to them.

With the recent passing of my husband's grandmother, he has repeatedly expressed his appreciation for the care she received at her hospice. He felt they really went the extra mile to make her comfortable, and not only that but they made her friends and family members comfortable during their difficult period of letting go. While I don't necessarily agree with everything in their mission statement, they have proven quite directly that they are a worthy institution doing much good, and someday I'd hope to give back to them.

So this "short little post" has somewhat grown, as I ruminate on Christmas and consumerism and charities and choices - on the times my family has been touched by tradgedy this past year, and how lucky we've been at the same time. Big issues, much too big probably for a craft blog, so I'll let them rest here. I hope you are all feeling the holiday spirit, whatever that means to you - and reflecting on this past year and all the good it brought, all the possibility that lies ahead. Best Wishes for Health and wealth and happiness and love, this season and all year round.

Mighty Mention

Oh my goodness, I just noticed that I got a mention on Maggie's Mighty Girl Blog back on November 30th! She had asked for submissions of your bucketlist (though she calls it a "Mighty Life List") and I guess she must have read mine. She's featuring a single item from a bunch of different people, I'm under the 2nd photo here - I'll let you go there to see which of my dreams she found noteworthy.

Maggie seems like a pretty hip chick, doing such amazing things as swimming with glowing plankton and hosting a cool whip fight, but we could never be friends because I'm too jealous of her Intel project where they "sponsored" her bucket list achievements - how amazing is that? Also, I think she lives in San Francisco, and she wears fancy shoes, so it would just never work out.

Another Blog Gem for You - Regretsy

I LOVE Etsy, I've said it before, but like any commerce site it has it's fair share of "WTF?" moments too. "Artwork" that looks like children's scribbles listed for thousands of dollars, fugly clothing nobody should wear, and way too many people who were inspired by "The Vagina Monologues."

This is where Regretsy comes in.

My dear friend and possible fellow Internet time-waster, Al, shared this link with me and it is HEEEEEE-larious! They round up the best of the worst Etsy has to offer, and riff on them appropriately.

Such is the case with Granny's Miley Cyrus outfit above. Egads people. Who is going to have nightmares about this? To make it it one sin, but then to MODEL it!?!?! That might be unforgivable...

Sadly, this extra attention often results in the awful artists making huge sales! Oh no! They have a whole page of their site showing items they've featured that are now SOLD.

***But for some high-class appropriate for all ages handmade art, don't forget to enter my blog contest by Friday - read and comment on this post!***

AWARD WINNING True Blood Paper Doll Cupcake Smackdown

I think I was waiting to crop photos for this post (which I never did), and then forgot about it completely - but now that they were featured on CampBlood, I just had to share one of my "book club" member's craftastic creation: True Blood Paper Doll Cupcake Smackdown!

Confused?

You know I used to be in a book club, and that book club reorganized as a TV watching club ("art film night") watching - True Blood in particular. Each week we'd gather for deep discussions and half naked Ryan Kwanten, cheering of Eric and contemplation of Bill's awful hair.

CampBlood is a website that looks at horror movies and culture, and one of their features is a video blog (or vlog, if you prefer) called "Blood Work" where two hilarious dudes comment on each True Blood episode, and one of said dudes created a line of PAPER DOLLS based on characters of the show.

The paper dolls are fantabulous, and available here. They've even added the long awaited Eric now!

On finale night, Carin brought our group yummy Byerly's cupcakes each decorated with a TB paper doll! She actually colored them by hand when her printer died, how's that for dedication? She mounted each one on a straw like a stick puppet.

To determine which cupcake you got, you drew a "speech bubble" with an excellent quote from the series, and matched them up. We then spent an inordinate amount of time dressing our characters

Well, we dressed SOME of them... like Jason got his boots...

But Sam was just too cute in his "I just shifted back into human form and haven't found my clothes yet" get up:

You can click on the photos for a larger version to read the quotes - which of course we were spouting and impersonating the whole time. More quotes also listed on today's LovingTrueBloodinDallas, and seriously these run through my head all the time as my silent yet hilarious commentary on the world.

She even added an extra character, the "Big-Ass-motha-fucking-Paul-Bunyan-Pig!" and that's the one I got :) He's now chillin' his bacon in my car, and we scream at bad drivers together.

Anyways, as if that wasn't enough, CampBlood also hosted a "cubicle puppet show contest" which Carin entered as well as sent a photo of the "book club" cupcakes, and she was featured on the site today! She didn't win the grand prize, but what an awesome shout out. Carin, you rock! So glad you joined our "book club."

Bucket List Cloud

I wordle-d my bucketlist!

Wordle reads a segment of text and creates a visual representation of how often certain words appear, the more often, the bigger those words are in the graphic. It makes sense that my verbs are the biggest - Get, Go, Make, Learn See. It's probably a little sad that "Get" is the biggest - but another reminder that with MONEY, most of my dreams could come true (hint, hint, Intel)

More Alice Inspiration

I was poking around the web today and found some other amazing Alice parties that I thought I'd share - click the links for photos and commentary, there is a lot of inspiration here for both parties and costumes:

White Rabbit Tea by Valley of the Dolls, through the eyes of "Heart of Grrr", and again in

LA Weekly - more photos here.

Wonderland Surprise Party - just a group of friends getting together, so these costumes are totally homemade and easy to piece together. via "Kelly Carter"

Sims Cheshire Cat - I can't really say I understand RPGs, but this "costume" is still really cool and a very fun take on the Cheshire Cat. I've always loved me some punk rock/skaterboy angst. Via "mad image."

Mad Hatters - here's more strange virtual world stuff, but it's got a great steampunk twist that would be easy to copy. Via Second Life something or other...

Daily Giggles:

Knowing I have a desk job and sit at a computer all day, a few people have asked me if I have a daily routine of websites I check. The answer is YES, some of them obsessively (my world would be happier if everyone updated their sites and blogs on the hour). These ones aren't quite that prolific, but I rely on them for a daily giggle:

Passive Aggressive Notes - Snapshots of the great notes people leave for their roommates, landlords, on the street, etc. They run the gamut of passive aggressive to straight up calls to war. I can admit to writing a few of these myself (i.e. "HEY DOUCHE BAG, IF YOU CAN'T PARK BETWEEN THE LINES, YOU SHOULDN'T BUY THE CAR!") though I've never submitted anything to the site...yet :)

Cake Wrecks - they showcase a daily "wreck" of a cake created by a "professional." Their wedding cakes have been particularly hilarious, especially when they show first what the bride ORDERED and then what she RECEIVED. Probably only funny because it happened to someone else, but good for a few laughs. On Sundays they feature AMAZING cakes to balance out the snark.

Fail Blog - the words "FAIL" and "EPIC" which are so pervasive in my descriptions of the world I can blame squarely on this site, which shows user submitted photos and videos of all things wrong in the world - my favorites are the bad parenting and phallic shaped fails, i.e. water fountains that look a little too much like anatomy and kids in the background of Mommy's trampy Myspace photos. Nice.

Ugliest Tattoos - a daily reminder of why you should think before you ink. This is a blog of poorly executed or just plain strange tattoos you can't imagine someone going through life with. And paying big money for. And enduring hideous pain for.

Apostrophe Abuse - this one isn't updated as regularly as the others, but I have to support the important work they are trying to do - using the power of public shaming to encourage proper grammar and spelling. This is another user-submitted site showing apostrophe overuse (it's rarely the other way around) most often in professional signs and printed materials. FAIL.

Three Happy Thoughts (AKA: Trying REALLY HARD to be in a good mood!)

I am in a tres terrible mood today, and it's just not getting better very quickly. I slept poorly, got some irritating tasks at work, and my computer refuses to do what I tell it, so I feel all around agitated. Luckily I have "book club" tonight, so it's not a total loss, but since I still have a few more hours to kill before then, I thought I'd round up some "happy thoughts" to tide me over...

1. Cupcake toppers (and candle holders) from lollipop workshop. Bakerella featured these on her blog (she of the "cake pop" fame) and I'm in love with the little space man on the left. Apparently the rest of the world is too, lollipop workshop is pretty much sold out of everything right now - and they don't seem to be cheap. Good for them!

Vikings look better in pink.
Pink spandex preferably
(though that's not till next season.)
And that black tank top isn't too shabby either.

Mmmm, Eric.

The only viking I care to hear about, that's for sure. He'd absolutely end this snively drama queen. Isn't that football team supposed to be moving sometime soon anyways?
Jag tycker om Eric...

I've loved these suckers from the time they were the "big ticket" item on the cafeteria snack cart. I remember thinking $0.50 was rough, now I think these things go for over a buck each - but they're still totally worth it. I've actually considered a strongly worded letter to my local Rainbow, which instead carries the far inferior "Mrs. Field's" ice cream cookie sandwiches, which are not rolled in the tiny magic chocolate chips that really make the Kempswich. So yes, sometimes I make a totally separate trip to a Cub across town just for a little pack of these guys. And then I try to hide them from my husband.

Retro Fun for Everyone

Hello, Internet, sorry I skipped yesterday - it's not that I'm not working on projects - I am knee deep in Halloween actually - but I'm not ready to blow any surprises quite yet ;) So instead here is another diversion: MadMen Yourself!

I love these generators that don't even make you sign in or create a dumb account (and consequently get spammed forever)and this one is adorable! Here I am hanging with the gang at Sterling Cooper. You can also choose a scene from a swingin' bar, an advertising presentation, a torrid mid-day affair, or any number of other backgrounds. Quite fun.

I want to love MadMen, but so far I'm still on the fence. My inner hipster loves the aesthetic, but the storylines are still kind of stunted. There's a big premier party in MN that looks like uber retro fun - viewing, cocktails, prizes - and really isn't everything more fun in costume?. Sadly it's the day after the next bachelorette party and that's hardly ideal...Let's just say I couldn't have survived the era of 3 martini lunches.

Liana's Paper Doll Blog

How cool is this?!?!? I just stumbled onto this adorable site, Liana's Paper Doll Blog. Each day she features at least one FREE, DOWNLOADABLE paper doll dress of her own design! What a great project for a designer to keep sharp and increase your portfolio.

She appears to have covered a lot of ground, including a mermaid costume EVERY MONDAY!, numerous period pieces, and a TON of pop-culture inspired outfits like Bella Swan's wedding dress, Echo's yoga outfit, and something from Battlestar Galactica.

She's also got interesting stories on her inspiration - here she live blogs her reaction to the Oscars and you get a running commentary on the fashions through her eyes. She's clearly a sci-fi fan, as I've seen her gather inspiration from Battlestar Galactica, Dollhouse, and Firefly, among others.

Sadly, it appears she's bailed on this blog, the last post being in April - but there's quite a history there to wade through, and maybe she'll pick it up again.
